What is couple and relationship therapy?
Living in close relationships is one of the most meaningful things we have – but also one of the most challenging. Regardless of how long you have been together, there may be periods of distance, misunderstandings or repeated conflicts. Then it can be difficult to find your way back to each other without outside support.
In couple and relationship therapy, you get help to understand what is happening in your relationship – both on the surface and underneath. It can be about recognizing patterns that create distance, exploring needs and longings, or finding new ways to communicate when conversations have become stuck.
The therapy can be helpful whether you want to strengthen your relationship, are facing a crisis, considering separation or need support in parenting. Even close family relationships outside couples can sometimes be the focus.
How do we work in couple and relationship therapy?
We offer sessions where you meet with a therapist who leads the process and helps you create security, structure and understanding. The work is based on what you want to examine and improve, and is adapted to your particular relationship.
We work integratively with elements from different forms of therapy – for example, communication skills from CBT, affect-focused elements where emotions and needs are allowed to take place, and systemic perspectives to understand the interaction between you. The focus is not on finding right or wrong, but on understanding patterns, expressing yourself more clearly and listening with curiosity.
In some cases, we also work with individual conversations as part of the process, if it is deemed helpful for the whole.
What can the conversations lead to?
Couples therapy is not just about ‘solving problems’ – it’s about creating greater understanding and connection. By putting into words what is felt, listening to each other and trying new ways of meeting, many couples can regain a sense of closeness, clarity and common direction. In some cases, therapy also supports couples in making difficult decisions in a respectful way.
We approach each relationship with respect for the different life stories, experiences and ways of expressing yourselves. The goal is to create a place where you can explore together how you can live more in harmony – with each other and with yourselves.
