What is IPT?
IPT stands for interpersonal therapy and is a structured form of therapy that focuses on your close relationships. It is based on the idea that our well-being is strongly influenced by how we feel about others – and that changes, conflicts or losses in relationships are often a trigger for depression, anxiety or crisis.
IPT works to understand the connection between psychological symptoms and relational life events, such as a separation, conflict, loss or life transition. Therapy helps you process the past, recognize your own patterns and find new ways of communicating and relating.
IPT is mainly used for depression, but also for anxiety, grief and crises related to changes in life situations or relationships.
What is it like to work with IPT?
Attending IPT means that together you identify one or two relational problem areas that the therapy focuses on. It can be about processing a loss, dealing with a conflict, adapting to a new life situation or understanding yourself in close relationships.
The therapy is structured, but also warm and compassionate. The focus is not on childhood but on what is happening here and now in your relationships. You will be helped to understand your own feelings, needs and ways of interacting – and supported to communicate in new ways.
IPT is suitable for those who notice that their relationships affect their well-being – or that their well-being affects how they feel with others.
