What is crisis, trauma & PTSD therapy?
Major life events, sudden losses or prolonged stresses can leave deep scars. Sometimes we recover on our own, but when the stress becomes overwhelming or prolonged, it can lead to persistent symptoms such as anxiety, difficulty sleeping, intrusive memories or avoidance of reminders of what happened.
In post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), everyday life can be severely affected – it becomes difficult to feel safe, trust others or be present in the moment. Even in crises that do not meet the criteria for PTSD, the reaction can be strong and affect both relationships and quality of life.
We can help you process what has happened, understand your reactions and find ways to regain a sense of control, coherence and faith in the future.
How do we work with trauma and crisis reactions?
We use methods that are supported by research and adapted to your specific situation and needs. This may include, for example:
Trauma-focused CBT, where we work on gradually approaching difficult memories and changing how they affect you today
Written Exposure Therapy (WET ) – a structured and effective form of therapy where you process traumatic events through writing
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ) – a method that uses eye movements or other stimuli to help the brain process memories that are “stuck”. Please note that we are not currently able to offer EMDR as part of the care choice therapy.
In a crisis, we can also work to stabilize everyday life, strengthen your ability to manage emotions and help you sort out thoughts, feelings and needs in a time that may feel chaotic or meaningless.
